Lorien Novalis School has been an amazing experience for my daughter.  From the moment we called to inquire we experienced a warm 'family' welcome and that has continued.  My daughter loves going to school and as a result her school work has improved dramatically.  She has made some amazing friendships.  Her experience here has helped reignite her love of learning, her curiosity and her imagination.  The school offers a wholistic approach which embraces academic and creative learning which  is engaging and imaginative.  I wish I had discovered Lorien Novalis earlier!

Money driven school who do not care for the welfare of children.

Lorien Novalis is a school that not only teaches students, it prepares them for the future. Combining the school curriculum with insightful class trips and excursions, fantastic and committed teachers and beautiful grounds, Lorien students learn resilience, problem solving and creativity and become part of a supportive, extended community. It's what schooling for the future should be,

I attended this school from 1986-89 so things may have changed. My experiences were very negative. I was aged 6 to 8 when I went there. First the positive - overall I would say there was less bullying and infighting amongst students compared to state schools. The camps and activities were also a lot of fun.

The negative is that its a very authoritarian rigid school masquerading as creative. Next time you goto an open day notice that all the kids work is largely the same? Rainbow out in the same prescriptive manner. The kids arn't allowed to deviate.

It was also made pretty clear that Steiner was morally superior to the state system. As a kid I just accepted this but looking back it was drummed into us in a very cult like manner.

At age 6 I started to learn to code on the latest family computer. Steiner claim to foster creativity but only through rigid outlook of Anthroposophy (their non evidence based religion). Far from being encouraged to code at age 6 (which has turned out to be a career blessing) my teacher would give out detention or give me chores if subjects of the computer were bought up. Once we were making clay figures and while forming mine as a joke I said it was pacman. That earnt me a massive talking too. I kept my coding practice at age 6 (something that should be nurtured) as a secret.

The other thing is in retrospect a lot of the teachers struck me has kinda having issues. Its one thing to be into say mindfullness meditation and a completely other thing to be right into the new age sub culture. Like many subcultures it kinda attracts people with issues of a certain type. I think a lot of my teachers had repressed anger issues and perhaps they found some meaning in this kind of quakery. This would manifest itself in fits of rage at the children. I remember my teacher could go from zero to a thousand in a few seconds for the most minor of infringements. I also remember teachers slapping students in the face as a discplinary measure. I was slapped in the face once. This never happened in the state system.

When I was there the kind of "creative in the same way" behavior they would deem fine would be what I would think be against modern OH&S laws. We would often stray from school property to make cubbies in the forests near by. They didn't seem to mind. Other kids would setup crazy swings over ponds and stuff well away from adult supervision. I guess I kinda dislike the modern OH&S culture but this kinda the complete opposite. Say a kid broke an arm in the middle of no where?

This is the kind of thing you don't see as a parent. When I was being lectured in a 1:1 with my teacher about the evils of pacman after school my dad unexpectidly entered the room as he was seeing a production that my brothers class had put on. The change of face in my teacher was remarkable. "Oh its all good, im just having a quick chat with your son". No! You wern't, you were abmonishing my interest in coding and computer games.

I pleaded with my parents to let me leave Steiner and they did. When I went to a state school I was so far behind. Took me years to catch up in reading and writing. I recently had a school reunion and the experience of almost every one else in my class mirrored this. They left, went to a state school and were far behind in their learning.

If you don't think Steiner is rigid - pack your children's crayons with a lot of black ones and tell them you would like then to do a drawing in mainly black. Or even a little black. This goes agains their Anthroposophy religion. Ask why is all their work the same? Rainbows? Why can't they be individual, using a different color scheme? Why do their drawings always have to have non clear boundaries?

For me the state system fostered more creativity and diversity despite superficial on the surface things like uniforms. If authoritarianism and narrow minded religion is your thing and you want your children criticised or chastised for thinking differently send them to Steiner.
