Parent Reviews
Excellent school! The teachers are incredible - so committed, inclusive and caring. I feel very connected and included by the whole community.
I love how engaged my kids are in their education and I look forward to them joining the secondary school where I see such amazing, knowledgeable teachers. When I look at the graduates Sophia Mundi produces each year: and see how down to earth, compassionate, well-rounded and talented they are, well that’s when I know we’re in the right school and my kids are in good hands. The school has strong academic rigour, but also room for heart, for creativity and for each other.
I cannot recommend Sophia Mundi highly enough. The approaches to learning used in Steiner education, and at Sophia Mundi, continue to awe me with their thoughtfulness and sophistication. We chose Sophia Mundi because of its beautiful location, the progressive and creative community it sits within, and because we wanted our daughter's education to teach her how to be a whole person, not just prepare for working life. We were also drawn to the school's emphasis on the environment and different cycles in our environment and lives. This holistic thinking is doing our daughter a lot of good. What we did not expect when we joined the school a few years ago was the loving, supportive school community, which it is a pleasure to be part of. The whole experience is doing our family a lot of good.
Sophia Mundi and its wonderful community has delivered the Steiner education experience to our children in a balanced and supportive way. Every single teacher and staff member seems to love what they do, and this shows in the way they support the pupils. We could not have asked for more.
Best experience going here best school iv ever been to from year 1 till year 4. still remember everything about the best memories.
The school has a serious problem aligning its actions with its values.
It punishes students who tell the truth, turns a blind eye to students participating in illegal behaviour particularly if the parents of students are involved with the school either via teaching or other means, and has no interest in examining potential problems within the faculty.
The school is also staffed with adults who use intimidation and threats on both children and adults alike, lie to cover themselves and/or the school, and pass the buck at every opportunity — to the point where blame is laid at the feet of staff who no longer work there. This then closes the door on investigating issues further while also sullying the reputation of former staff who probably have no idea their reputations are being tarnished.
There is an unwillingness to take any responsibility while at the same time laying all accountability at the feet of students—do as I say but not as I do.
The Compass system is used to spy and report on children without any follow up to ascertain whether the reports are accurate and without any effort made to discuss any of the reported issues with the students. The students literally do not know they are being reported on, nor do they know which behaviours are being reported on.
There is also great inconsistency between how staff view behaviour in children. The vice principal accused my son of being homophonic. One of his friends said the same comment a few weeks later in front of the classroom teacher and the teacher responded with “Oh _____. Sometimes boys just say things. Move on!”
A new principal is in place who is clearly confused about the country he is in, using threats of a “permanent record” which he implied is forever negatively attached to students for their entire schooling career, and greatly reduces their chances of gaining entry into university (in my mind I was thinking “Have you been listening to a little too much Placebo?”). He also seemed to take pleasure in this situation we were dealing with which absolutely appalled my husband and I.
This same principal chose to literally turn his back on a 10 year old boy on his last day and ignore him, while the staff member talking with the principal excused himself to make a point of saying goodbye to the 10 year old boy and wish him well while the principal kept his back turned the entire time.
This last non-action and action sums up the complex problems within the school perfectly.
My two children go to Sophia Mundi, and are thriving. They both went to Little Sophia Kindergarten (which was WONDERFUL!) and then started in prep at Sophia Mundi.
Prep is a little oasis of wonder, play, curiosity and learning how to be part of a social world. They move from prep into the “big” school (which is really a very small school) where they continue their journey of learning how to be active participants in the world and developing a love for learning.
The teachers are passionate and highly skilled. Due to the small class sizes and high teacher/student ratio, they really know every child, and work with them to support them in their learning journey. The curriculum is rich and broad, focusing on the holistic development of each student, embedding theoretical concepts into hands on, practical contexts.
My child is an advanced learner, and the school has been great, putting in place programs to extend and support him academically, while allowing him to be in the same class as his peers, supporting his social and emotional development alongside his academic skills. Differentiated and inclusive education is something Sophia Mundi does well.
I love the diversity of the school – and the cultural diversity is celebrated in the classrooms, with children and parents sharing the traditions, food and languages of their culture.
The community is also something I love about the school – people are friendly and welcoming and go out of their way to help each other. Drop off and pick up are such an enjoyable part of the day!
The location of the school is definitely also a highlight – it is nestled in the grounds of the Abbotsford Convent arts precinct in a nook of the Yarra River, right next to the Collingwood Children’s farm. The kids look out from the heritage buildings to the beautiful bushland, and horses, cows and sheep come to say hello through the fence. It’s pretty magical! An inner-city school, but if feels as though we are in the country! We ride to school along the Yarra trail, which is a wonderful way to start and end the day.
We highly recommend Sophia Mundi as a school for children to thrive, and thank all the teachers and support staff for the passion, dedication and care they show to our children.
Finding this school was like finding a hidden gem. My child’s experience of coming to school here has been fantastic and our family has found a community.
Sophia Mundi Steiner School has a unique location, passionate, dedicated, and compassionate teachers, a beautiful community, a curriculum that considers the whole person, and a deep knowledge and care for each student. When people ask our middle school student how she enjoys school, she says she feels 'at home'.
Things we love about Sophia Mundi are walking through the Abbotsford Convent every day, brushing shoulders with the vibrant arts community, being greeted so warmly when we walk through the door, seeing and hearing the cattle, sheep, and chickens out the windows (yet being so close to the CBD!), the inspirational musical and artistic support the school provides that considers the development of each unique student, the rich academic curriculum, the sense of being part of the community, the opportunities for students to build multi-age relationships right across the school through the music and at lunchtime sporting and social activities, the festivals, and how authentically and caringly we are met.
Beautifully located, a special environment with extremely experienced teachers and lovely community.
I’m in love with Steiner education and the school, we drive 40 min each morning. The beauty of the surroundings, wonderful parents community and dedicated teachers make this school experience just a highlight of our life.
The community of like minded people who support each other make it feel like the second home.
Prep here is a magic space for 5-6 yo who play a lot and have hot lunches, so no lunch boxes in prep.
Aftercare is wonderful as well and it is run in a separate cottage with a couch and kitchen. Kids can relax, play, they are served a snack and they play outside.
No gadgets, eurythmics, knitting, sewing, calligraphy develops the child’s brain, in our age of AI it is very important to raise children who can create the reality rather than be a passive consumer.
