Our son spent three years attending Girton's Junior School (portions of years 1-4) before our family returned to America as originally scheduled. We initially chose Girton because it was two blocks from our temporary accommodation, private (no catchment area to contend with when our permanent address was uncertain), and without a religious curriculum (Anglican roots with 1 mandatory service, but not religious curriculum), but it was definitely the right choice for both our son and our family. Mr. Thompson, head of junior school, is absolutely wonderful with the students and staff, the families & carers, and the activities, along with sharing his love of literature with the children. The vibe was different when he took long service leave for a quarter, but we were so happy when he returned. Every educator we interacted with was wonderful & each had their own strengths. Mrs. Simone Martin stood out for her support in helping our son understand and adapt to the lingual differences between Australian and American English so he didn't fall behind due to transitioning schools, curriculum & year groups (he skipped from near the end of Prep equivalent in America to the 2nd quarter of Year 1 at Girton when we changed from North to South Hemisphere). We also appreciated the emphasis on music (compulsory violin lessons and group performance in year 2), art and drama (in the weekly curriculum & the annual musical drama production), public speaking (school assemblies with weekly opportunities for open mike), emotional intelligence (as a result, our son is MUCH more self-aware and in tune with the emotions of others than we were at his age), daily swimming lessons 4 weeks per year & breadth of physical education. Another important factor for us was the diversity of the student population. Having moved from the globally diverse Washington, D.C. area, we were grateful for the ethnic mosaic of students at Girton Junior School. While I was a bit concerned sometimes about high academic expectations, I found this only to be in certain classrooms, and the challenges provided opportunities for us to guide our son through additional life lessons beyond the intended curriculum objectives.
Thank you Mr. Thompson, Girton Junior teachers & support staff for making our 3 years with you truly excellent!
I'm a student there and we got some very decent teachers (MISS HOLMES AND MR SHARPLEY>>>>) and uh everyone is taught well and different learning needs are catered for. In my experience bullying is dealt with well and the school withholds strong values and teaches its students valuable lessons in a safe environment. the options for co currics are fab and the house spirit is great.
A lot better than most of the schools in Bendigo. Very good library too. Only major downfall is the amount of homework. 9/10 would reccomend if you can afford it
