A bowl of porridge is one of those simple pleasures that’s good for your little one’s digestion, nutrition and energy levels, and a bowl of Custard Oats is even better!

With the added goodness of eggs and banana, the Custard Oats recipe below is suitable for babies aged six months and up, and it comes from a brand-new book called Baby Food Bible.

This book is the brainchild of two mums and nutrition experts, Julia Tellidis and Lauren Skora; and for their Custard Oats recipe, they’ve added an egg to a standard bowl of oats to give it a protein boost and introduce nutrients like iron, choline, B12 and vitamin D.

This baby breakfast will go down a treat with your whole family because it’s cheap and easy to make, and it tastes warm and wonderful – especially on those chilly mornings.

Allow two minutes for prep and 10 minutes for cooking, then get ready for your baby, or bigger kid, to go back for seconds!

Here’s how you make two serves of Custard Oats:

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 cup rolled oats
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup milk of choice
  • 1 large banana, peeled and mashed
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 egg
  • Poached pear and yoghurt, to serve

TO MAKE

Cook the oats, water and milk in a saucepan over a low-medium heat.

Stir well for five minutes until the oats are a creamy consistency and all the liquid has been absorbed.

Stir in the mashed banana and cinnamon.

Once the porridge is almost ready, add in the egg and stir for a minute or so until the egg is cooked through and the porridge is creamy.

TO SERVE

Top with poached pears, some more cinnamon and your yoghurt of choice.

STORAGE

Julia and Lauren say these oats are best enjoyed warm, but can be stored in the fridge for up to two days, or in the freezer for up to two months. If frozen, make sure you thaw the oats before reheating.

Once your little one has motored through their Custard Oats, they’ll have plenty of energy for the day ahead, and by morning tea, they might be ready for a Supercharged Squishie!

These orange- and lemon-flavoured gummies are sweet, sour, squishy and delishy, with the added bonus of vitamin C, and you’ll find the recipe for them on KindiCare’s Instagram or Facebook page, or in the Baby Food Bible.
