6 ways to get set for Dr. Seuss Day!

Dr. Seuss Day is coming up on 2 March, and although this is a great excuse to pull out those Grinch pyjamas you got last Christmas, and research the life and times of Theodor Seuss Geisel, there are lots of different ways to celebrate Dr. Seuss’ birthday!

To get your preschooler in on the action, here are six things you can do on March 2 – or whenever suits:

1. Read some Dr. Seuss books

Dr. Seuss wrote more than 60 children’s books, and if you’d like to have 20 of his best in one handy place, you can’t go past A Classic Case of Dr. Seuss

This ‘Seusscase’ is packed full of word play, kooky characters and meaningful messages; and although we’ve got a few favourite stories (like The Sneetches, The Lorax and Oh, The Places You’ll Go!), we’re pretty sure your little one will love every book in the box.

Then, when you’re ready for some new material, you can check out How the Grinch Lost Christmas!, which is a sequel to How the Grinch Stole Christmas! and was actually written by Alastair Heim and illustrated by Aristides Ruiz in the style of Dr. Seuss.

2. Play a Dr. Seuss game

There are a few Dr. Seuss games out there, but one that’s perfect for preschoolers and parents is the Dr Seuss. Thing One and Thing Two Where Are You? Game.

You can play it with two people, in 15 minutes, and the game has a fun hide-and-seek dynamic, because it comes with a Thing One and Thing Two plush that you hide at the start of play, and find to win.

There are questions and clues along the way, and your preschooler will be very keen to get that ‘Go Look!’ card.

3. Print off some Dr. Seuss activities

You’ll learn a lot about the world of Dr. Seuss when you click through to Seussville, and this website contains a stack of colouring-in pages, word-finds, mazes and other activity sheets.

These printables are great if your child has their pencil grip and alphabet sorted, but if your little learner wants to scribble, that’s a-ok too!

4. Stick up a Dr. Seuss quote

If you’re looking for some interior design inspo and words to live by, then a Dr. Seuss wall quote sticker may fit the bill.

There are lots of colourful quips you can add to your kiddo’s bedroom, including, ‘You’re off to great places! Today is your day! Your mountain is waiting. So… get on your way!’

And if you’d prefer to stick up a poster, this Dr. Seuss Horton Hears A Who wall art is a good reminder to be kind, be true and just be you.

5. Cuddle a Dr. Seuss plush

There’s always room for one more plush in your kiddo’s collection, and maybe it's time to invite a Dr. Seuss character to the party?

This Cat in the Hat plush stands at 50cm tall (from toe to top hat), so he’ll definitely make his presence known, and he’s good for quiet cuddles and boisterous re-enactments of his books.

6. Make Dr. Seuss cupcakes

Unless you’re a professional cake decorator, a three-tiered cartoon-style Dr. Seuss cake is probably beyond you, but a plate of Truffula Tree cupcakes is likely to be in your league!

You’ll find the instructions here, but basically, you make chocolate cupcakes, add green icing, stick in a paper straw and top with a puff ball of store-bought fairy gloss.

These beauties will go well with your Grinch pyjamas and a reading of The Lorax, and however you celebrate Dr. Seuss Day, we hope you and your tyke have tons of fun!
