Kid-friendly House Plants
Six indoor plants your little one will love to grow, as recommended by the gardening gurus at Glowpear.
BY HEJIRA CONVERY, KINDICARE
Gardening is a really positive thing to do with your young child, and if you’re short on space, or just want to green up the home, then indoor gardening is a great idea.
There are loads of plants you can successfully grow in the kitchen, living room or semi-indoor balcony.
And whether you’re looking for colour, flavour or a swoon-worthy scent, here are six house plants that are simple and exciting to grow with your preschooler, as recommended by Glowpear.
1. Cherry tomatoes
Cherry tomatoes are a popular choice for childcare centre gardens, and they’re perfect for the family home as well.
Your little one will be thrilled to watch the plants grow from tiny seeds to yummy tomatoes; and as a parent, it’s good to know that these fruiters are low maintenance and high yield.
As long as you give the cherry tomatoes lots of sunlight, regular water, and a little bit of attention, you’ll be doing the ‘veggie patch to plate’ thing in no time!
2. Strawberries
Sweet, homegrown strawberries are another treat for little people, and although harvesting is always a highlight, it’s also exciting to watch the red berries grow from the pretty white flowers.
Strawberries do need full sunlight, so choose a bright spot for them in the house, then enjoy the cottage garden vibe they bring to your living space.
3. Cress
Cress is a very fast growing edible that will quickly get your child interested in gardening.
Cress seeds often sprout in days, and there’s the option of creating cute cress heads or planting cress shapes (like a heart, smiley face or first initial) in a planter box.
4. Mint
Mint excites the senses with its colour, texture, taste and smell, and this healthy herb is super easy to grow.
Mint thrives in bright, indirect sunlight, and whether your child is making a magic potion, or you’re mixing up a refreshing beverage, you’ll be happy to have this plant on hand.
5. Kale
If your little one isn’t the biggest fan of greens, then growing this impressively bushy super food may just change their mind!
Kale grows well in the cooler months, with a good amount of sunlight, and if you can’t tempt your pre-schooler with a kale smoothie, then some crispy kale chips may appeal.
6. Lavender
Although lavender isn’t edible, the leaves smell amazing, the flowers are gorgeous, and this charming plant is very easy to grow.
Lavender doesn’t like too much water, so you can put it in a bright indoor spot and enjoy this low-fuss lovely as a splash of colour, or a key ingredient in a preschooler-made perfume.
All of the above plants will grow amazingly in a Glowpear Urban Garden, and if outdoor gardening is your preference then you’re in luck!
Cherry tomatoes, strawberries, mint, kale and lavender all grow well outside, and the Glowpear Urban Garden loves open spaces too.
Happy gardening!
